Season 3’s Fence Flappers
The Fence Flappers are an obstacle, used as the first obstacle in the Qualifier during episode 2 of Season 3.
Contestants must run across a beam set next to an array of 11 panels that can fire out at any time. After falling off the first time, they must climb up out of the mud pit and onto a staircase accompanied by four white foam spikes and attempt the same thing on the other side. In practice, this obstacle is near impossible as the obstacle's controller can perfectly time the activation of the panels to the movement of each contestant. Compared to similar obstacles such as the Smack Wall Sweeper (which was used as the first obstacle in the Qualifier during episodes 8 and 14 of the same season), the panels on the Fence Flappers are unavoidable when activated.
It was replaced by the marginally easier Door Knock in the next episode.
An upgraded version of this obstacle named the Spiked Whackers later appeared as the first obstacle in the Gauntlet and the fifth obstacle overall in the Wipeout Zone of the same season, being paired with Arms and Dangerous and interchanged with the Crankshaft.
Game Appearances[]
The Fence Flappers appeared as the fourth obstacle in the Qualifier of Wipeout: The Game for the Nintendo DS and the Wii, being interchanged with both the Door Knock (which was used as the first obstacle in the Qualifier during episodes 3 and 11 of Season 3) and the Sucker Punch (which was used as the second obstacle in the Qualifier of Seasons 1-3 and 7). It also had a mud pit. When a flap was about to open, smoke appeared from under the specific flap. No spikes appeared in the game.
